Empire furniture was heavy and massive, and is considered by many as being decadent and the end of good furniture. Most surviving Maine examples, though, reflected robust Empire forms and features. Massive pieces, they depended on surfaces of figured wood (usually Mahogany) columns, and scrolled feet. The beautiful mahogany used, and the fine carving were highlights of the style. Mahogany remained the favorite wood but was often used in combination with veneers of either tiger-striped maple or bird's-eye maple. Crotch mahogany was also used frequently. Unlike earlier products, these Maine pieces much more closely followed national patterns, displaying few regional or local features. As this was Maine’s economic Golden Age, it was a period during which a substantial quantity of quality furniture was produced and of which many pieces still survive. Find us in RUHIM Websearch |
